Life in the 21st century is a lot different than a hundred years ago, let alone two thousand years ago. Internally, humans have stayed pretty much the same. We lose patience with petty things, we care too much about what other people think, and we struggle to cope with change.

With the growing uncertainty associated with everything from the job market to the environment, it’s not irrational to say that all humans could benefit from learning to think more rationally, be a little less anxious, and make the best possible use of their resources during this year.

With that said, here are 10 benefits you can experience by adopting a Stoic practice in your life.

1. Stoicism as an Antidote to The Crisis

The pandemic and economic crisis is an external event that doesn’t depend on us but that can bring some difficulties, such as layoffs, lower purchasing power, or additional stress.

A Stoic, as a victim of economic crisis, must admit his poverty, endure external difficulties, and finally accept his condition. Indeed, he has no responsibility to bear external misfortune.

Stoicism is not only a response to the crisis, but also to all the unfortunate difficulties that we may encounter in our lives, which definitely makes it a universal and timeless philosophy.

2. You Will be Led By Your Desires and Not By Your Fears

As Seneca recommends, running away from what scares us is the best way to stay addicted to it throughout your life. Follow your desires, establish them with enough certainty to overcome your fears, while thinking about what you will do if the worst happens.

3. You’ll Feel Fully Responsible For Your Life

You noticed how people who don’t stress don’t complain. They observe and act when they feel they can and want to make a useful contribution. They ignore anything they think has no influence. With Stoicism, you’ll be able to do the same.

4. You’ll Learn to Always Speak True

Be careful, speaking the truth doesn’t mean just saying what you mean. It would be socially unacceptable.

For the Stoics, it would be more the art of communicating one’s positions clearly and simply, without emotionally disturbing one’s interlocutors.

Respect people, but communicate wholeheartedly the relevant facts, your positions, your intentions, or your wishes.

5. You Will Focus on Things You Can Change

Stoics refused to waste time thinking about what they couldn’t control. They thought that our time and energy should only be spent on what we can control. For this reason, they believed that it is necessary to fully accept the past and the present — it is pointless to worry about the past, which cannot be changed, or to refuse to accept the present, which is unfolding in front of us right now.

Are you focused on the result or on enjoying the process and just doing your best to achieve your goals?

6. You Will Stop Caring About hat Others Think

We tend to value ourselves more than others, but we care more about other people’s opinions than our own. Impress yourself and don’t worry if everyone else is impressed.
